Christmas in Greece

In Greece they have a tradition called the Christmas boat. In Greece people usually decorate the boats at the ports. Decorating ships at the ports has been a long standing tradition especially in the islands for centuries.  The custom made its appearance along the coast, where seamen were coming back to their families for Christmas holidays after long periods away from home. Their kids would decorate these ships to welcome their dads back home.

Food. A traditional Christmas food in Greece is Christ’s Bread, or else christopsomo. It is prepared on Christmas Eve and it is eaten at the lunch of Christmas day. This is a round bread made with more special ingredients. The special ingredients raisins, aniseed, walnuts or almonds. I have tasted this bread and it is really good.

On Christmas Eve, children, especially boys, often go out singing ‘kalanda’ (carols) in the streets. They play drums and triangles as they sing. Sometimes they will also carry model boats decorated with nuts which are painted gold. Carrying a boat is a very old custom in the Greek Islands. If the children sing well, they might be given money, as well things to eat like nuts, sweets and dried figs. https://www.whychristmas.com/cultures/greece.shtml
